"What is the fault of a wordless mind? Of any being that does not say, but feels. Do not words only invoke feeling? Is not anything spoken done so for the single purpose of conveying some thought, the core essence of which is, in fact, without words? Words are only the bridge between thoughts, that minds must cross which know no other way. The very formation of words is like to plodding along after an idea, catching up with it inevitably, but not quickly. But those minds that use words as an old man uses a cane know nothing better. There has always been that bridge for them, no other way to get from one thought to the next. They believe it an accomplishment deserving merit for them to be able to walk across that bridge. It is an accomplishment, for there are minds that have no bridge, and do not think at all. But it is a small accomplishment. There are minds that walk across the bridge from one feeling to the next, from one idea to the next, from one thought to the next. But then there are minds that do not need a bridge. There are minds that fly. That think without words. Sometimes the absence of the bridge suggests the absence of thought. But sometimes the bridge is gone because it is no longer necessary. The mind has beome so advanced that it does not need to walk. Word-minded beings may look down on beings with wordless minds for being behind, when in fact, being wordless is being ahead. However, the wordless have not lost the use of words. If they come across a bridge, they can cross it. But the bridge spans only one small part of the rift between thoughts. What a liberty it must be to be limitless. To be able to cross at any point along the edge. But if walking across bridges is the first step, and flying across canyons is the second step, then what comes next? What will happen when minds do not cross the rift between thoughts, but throw themselves from the edge into the cold darkness between? What goes through their minds when they are caught falling between two thoughts? And once they are between, will they ever be able to cross again? If only terrible mindlessness exists between thoughts, how will they tell the rest of the minds not to follow? If no word has come from those lost between than who is to say that no mind has been there? Perhaps a few have taken the third step already. Perhaps many. I will avoid the edge, avoid falling, for I am quite content crossing from thought to thought. I will not say if I am of the limited word-minded or if I have learned to fly, but I will say that I believe this: Words without a mind to acknowledge them are nothing. Minds that do not need to acknowlege words are -anything-."
When the heck did I write this? XD 8th grade? 9th? I have no idea what I meant by it all. I may have been referring to infinite possibilities and unearthly beings, but the core notion sounds familiar enough. I'd say that the word-using and wordless minds refer to humans and non-human animals. I wouldn't go so far anymore as to say that humans are inferior -because- we use words. (I was a bit intense back then) But I still hold that the absence of a language does not denote the absence of thoughts and feelings. We are only able to prove to ourselves what the people around us are thinking and feeling by talking about it. Asking them. And comparing what they say to our own lives. We cannot ask animals, and they cannot explain themselves. But it is silly to think that because an animal doesn't have a word for the sun or the grass that it doesn't know what these things are or feel any enjoyment from them. As a human, I try sometimes to think without words. It can be a challenge, since whatever enters the mind can usually be narrated. Or a hypothetical conversation starts up. I look at an object and I instantly name it when I'm trying not to. I do appreciate words. Writing is a precious gift and I love to use it and read it and hear its music. But letting the mind free from bridges, flying, and crossing at any point... is quite something, when you catch yourself at it. ; )
